Entry three

Primary Research

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article19390.ece

This article is titled 'teenager pistol hoodie gloats' and was published in The Sun newspaper February 23 2007. The fact that a human being is having their identity stripped by being called a 'hoodie', shows how bad the state of yob culture is becoming in the UK. It implies that people that wear a popular fashion garment are all criminals and are being ostracised by society. The emphasis in the article is on the fact that it was done by a teenager, as apposed to the gun gesture which the boy is doing. The word teenager is written in bold, therefore highlighting the age of the boy again. This is an example of the media portraying all teenagers as being the same and as if ant-social behaviour like this is expected by society from them. Also, he is referred to as being a 'thug' which is unnecessary language used by Guy Patrick - A journalist for The Sun newspaper. Portrayal of youth such as this, is undoubtedly having a detrimental effect on society's view of teenagers.

This is an article published in bbc news: Wednesday, 14 November 2007. The article puts more emphasis on the fact that the offenders of the crime were wearing hoods rather than the crime they actually committed. This supports my question, as it is an example of the media creating a culture of believing all people that wear hoodies are criminals. This articlee is both useful and reliable as it is from bbc news which is a trustworthy source and it is also sited.

This source is an E4 ident, showing the national scare over hoodies. The ident has dwarfs dressed in clothes which have become stereotypical to young people, doing some exreme unrealistic things such as chasing policemen. The fact that E4 are able to make a joke out of the current situation regarding youths being labelled as criminals, shows that there is a clear awareness of it and that something needs to be done. As this source is an Ident from a well known television station it is reliable, however it is making a mockery of the whole idea and it is made more for the purpose of entertainment as well as to inform.

Entry One : My Topic & Question

To what extent is the media responsible for creating a yob culture?

I will focus on one tabloid newspaper (The Sun) and one broadsheet newspaper (The Times) and compare their representations to one film (Kidulthood)

I have chosen to look at these texts as they both reach mainstream audiences.
